International Day of the Midwife – 5th May 2022

Over the past two years, midwives, student midwives, maternity support workers and healthcare professionals have been faced with extraordinary circumstances and have gone above and beyond to continue to deliver exceptional care. On Thursday 5th May 2022, we celebrate midwives and the commitment they demonstrate to their profession on International Day of the Midwife.

Promoting best practice has always been displayed through the outstanding care that midwives and maternity support workers demonstrate, but as we enter a new phase in which the whole of society has to accept a level of “living with Covid”, the challenges faced over the past two years are far from behind us. It is important that the medical profession continues to guide the general public in order to support education, awareness, and encourage the absorption of key infection control lessons into our day-to-day lives.

The challenge is, how can the profession continually deliver incremental improvements in an area which is already a focus for excellence? The maternity ward is already a precious environment, where obstetric teams attach paramount importance to protecting “parent and baby” and ensuring a ‘positive’ childbirth experience. How can you introduce new ideas or products without upsetting this delicate balance?

One way this can be achieved is through ever-stronger collaboration between medical professionals and pharmaceutical companies. This is essential to drive innovation by enabling the manufacturers of clinical products to fully understand the challenges and requirements of frontline staff. Improved dialogue between medical professionals and the pharmaceutical sector can also boost the understanding of specific products, their benefits and uses in order to continue to deliver excellent patient care.

Derma UK have been supporting midwives for over 20 years and will always continue to do so. Through a portfolio of established, trusted brands with a 60-year heritage in Obstetric and Gynaecological practice, Derma UK will always endeavour to respond to the needs of the medical professional.  We will always strive to provide brands that support best practice and help to assist the reduction of infection and cross-contamination.

International Day of the Midwife provides a time to reflect upon the sacrifice and dedication shown not only during previous turbulent years, but on the challenges continuing to rise for the profession going forward.

Not only on International Day of the Midwife but every day, we thank you.
